When I’m thinking about Ellen one of the things that strikes me is the way she embeds the principles of spirituality and physicality into her own life and our lives (those of us lucky enough to share her friendship) outside our specific yoga practice.
I have attended some beautiful surf yoga workshops utilising the natural resources readily available to us in our little seaside town combining the strength, flexibility and focus developed through yoga, to initiate or enhance our experience of surfing. There is nothing quite like practicing yoga to the sounds of the sea with the increased awareness this brings of your own breath and the limitless capacity of your body, nurtured by Ellen’s wise guidance and the determination and confidence she has helped me gain.
Ellen brings a beautiful sense of spirituality to these classes which although starting gently, shift into a more intense flowing practice preparing us for the rigorous physical demands of surfing.
Whatever the venue or class Ellen imparts her teaching with an ever present lightness of touch and boundless sense of fun and exploration. A completely different experience and one I will never forget was the beautiful ceremony of 108 sun salutations on 30/12/18. We met up for the class which was a collaboration between Ellen and two other beautiful yoga teachers and was such an enriching experience at a time of year when our focus can become very shallow with the modern emphasis on needless consumption and excess. We completed all 108 salutations reflecting on the past year, thinking about the present, finally focusing on those elements we wished to take forward into the future. With delicious home made hot chocolate to warm us when the session closed we headed down to the sea to make an offering for the coming year. It was definitely the most beautiful start to the new year I have had and one I will treasure forever.
On a less formal, but no less meaningful and enjoyable level Ellen brings this practice to our runs in the hills and our climbing. Whether at a beautiful outdoor crag or in the less charming (but much loved) environment of our local indoor wall, whatever the occasion we benefit from her mindfulness and focus which reminds us that our yoga practice is an integral part of of our everyday lives, and an underpinning principle to all our other activities, not just an addition to an over busy schedule.
I cannot recommend Ellen’s classes enough. She brings to them her beautiful spirit with a keen professionalism, evidenced in her constant search for self improvement which feeds into her wonderful yoga teaching.Namaste
